Budget

Give me a list of everything we will need to license or purchase next year.

I know you don't know what training you will be developing, what the lab requirements will be, and if there are any AI initiatives we will be following.

Resource

How long will you need to create the training for the new solution next quarter?

I know that you don't know what is going to be released yet, but we need to create the schedule now.

Course

Have you completed the course blueprint for the X solution yet?

I know that they haven't finished defining which products are in the solution or what the use cases are. This is an Agile project and there aren't high-level design docs.

How can you plan when you don't have the details?

I would like to thank Stefan Baum at Avaya for his mentorship and guidance. He taught us the importance of flexibility and adaptability in project planning.

  • Build educated guesses based on the information available.

  • Add buffers and place holders for when new information arrives.

  • Document the assumptions your plans are built on with the understanding that plans may change if the assumptions change.

  • Document the risks associated with starting the project with incomplete information and the risks of waiting until information is available.

  • Create the resource plans, instructional designs, course blueprints and storyboards based on the information you have. If it needs to change later, change it later.

Some information is better than none.
